#82: Karl Benz (1844-1929)

Karl Benz (1844-1929) was a German engineer and inventor who designed and built the world's first practical automobile to be powered by an internal-combustion engine.

He also invented among other things, the accelerator, ignition using sparks from a battery, the spark plug, the clutch, the gear shift, the radiator and the carburetor. In other words, he is arguably the father of the automobile.

The automobile has benefited and enhanced hundreds of millions of lives around the world. It allows people and their goods to conveniently and quickly span significant distances in comfort, privacy and relative safety.
