#18: Edward Coke (1552-1634)

Edward Coke (1552-1634) was an English lawyer and influential advocate of liberty.

Coke helped to establish a secular foundation to English government by challenging the divine right of kings, which holds that monarchs get their consent to rule from God, as opposed to the citizens.

Further, he strongly contributed to the creating of institutions that battle and prevent tyranny. For example, he fought for the rule of law, as opposed to the arbitrary rule of men / tyrants. And he advocated that the law protects not merely the rights of a privileged few, but all men.

In addition, he can be considered the father of judicial review because he held that the courts could define the limits of the legislative and executive powers. This would later establish itself as the separation of government powers.

Coke's contributions and influence are profound in making liberty possible and preventing the chains of tyranny.
