#100: William Le Baron Jenney (1832-1907)

William Le Baron Jenney (1832-1907) was an architect who is known as the Father of the Skyscraper.

In his designs, he used metal columns and beams, instead of stone and brick to support the building's upper levels. Using this method, the weight of a building was reduced, making it possible to construct even taller structures. Later architects made the skyscraper esthetically beautiful, but it is Jenney who made it possible.

The skyscraper combines man's greatest engineering capabilities with his desire to reach the highest limits of his potential. In this respect, the skyscraper is, indeed, an appropriate symbol of Western culture and civilization.
