#75: Gregor Mendel (1822-1884)

Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) was an Austrian scientist and priest who is considered the "father of modern genetics."

He was the first person to document and comprehend the characteristics of successive generations of a living thing. Mendel demonstrated that the inheritance of traits follows particular laws, which were later named after him. The importance of Mendel's work was not recognised until the 20th century.

His discoveries have contributed to a better understanding of evolution and have helped to reduce or eliminate famine in much of the world through improved crop breeding.
