These individuals have most contributed to replacing ignorance with knowledge, savagery with civilization, disease with health, tyranny with liberty, poverty with abundance, and despair with happiness.

#84: Frank Whittle (1907-1996)

Frank Whittle (1907-1996) is considered the father of jet propulsion because of his major contributions to the invention of the jet engine.

The jet engine revolutionized flight, allowing planes to fly higher, faster and more efficiently. The jet engine has shrunk the size of the world, making it possible to travel to anywhere in mere hours. Without Whittle's invention, traveling long distances would be dramatically more expensive, time consuming and onerous.

There are few better symbols of advanced culture than humans flying in machines at the speed of sound in complete control and comfort.
