He is largely responsible for China abandoning communism in its economic policy and replacing it to a significant degree with capitalism. These reforms, while limited, have already lifted millions of Chinese from starvation and poverty and unlocked some of China's productive potential. While China today is still a dictatorship, the reforms that Deng Xiaoping initiated represent immense progress that may someday help China blossom into a nation that fully respects and upholds rights.
