These individuals have most contributed to replacing
ignorance with knowledge, savagery with civilization,

abundance, and despair with happiness.
#93: Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997)
Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997) served as the de facto leader of the People's
Republic of China from 1978 to the early 1990s.

He is largely responsible for China abandoning communism in its economic
policy and replacing it to a significant degree with capitalism.
These reforms, while limited, have already lifted millions of Chinese
from starvation and poverty and unlocked some of China's productive
potential.
While China today is still a dictatorship, the reforms that Deng Xiaoping
initiated represent immense progress that may someday help China blossom
into a nation that fully respects and upholds rights.
