#93: Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997)

Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997) served as the de facto leader of the People's Republic of China from 1978 to the early 1990s.

He is largely responsible for China abandoning communism in its economic policy and replacing it to a significant degree with capitalism. These reforms, while limited, have already lifted millions of Chinese from starvation and poverty and unlocked some of China's productive potential.

While China today is still a dictatorship, the reforms that Deng Xiaoping initiated represent immense progress that may someday help China blossom into a nation that fully respects and upholds rights.
